Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD

Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Neurodevelopmental disorders begin during the developmental years and can influence how a person learns, pays attention, communicates, processes information, regulates behavior, coordinates movement, and manages the demands of everyday life. This pathway explores conditions including ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, intellectual developmental disorders, learning disorders, communication disorders, and motor disorders, while recognizing that each condition—and each person’s experience—is different. These differences can continue into adulthood and may affect education, employment, relationships, confidence, organization, independence, and emotional well-being. The goal is not simply to focus on a diagnostic label, but to better understand the individual's strengths, challenges, needs, and practical ways of creating a life that works more effectively for them.

The UNpsych Framework

UNcover — What is actually happening?
Look beyond labels to identify the specific difficulties affecting everyday life such as attention, impulsivity, executive functioning, learning, communication, sensory experiences, social interaction, organization, emotional regulation, or movement—and also recognize the strengths and abilities that may have been overlooked.

UNderstand — Why does this affect me the way it does?
Develop a clearer understanding of how neurodevelopmental differences interact with environment, expectations, relationships, past experiences, and the demands of everyday life. Understanding replaces “Why can't I just do this?” with the more useful question, “What makes this difficult for me, and what helps me function better?”

UNlearn — What have I come to believe about myself?
Years of struggling, being corrected, falling behind, feeling different, or being misunderstood can create beliefs such as “I'm lazy,” “I'm not smart,” “I always mess things up,” or “Something is wrong with me.” UNlearning means separating genuine limitations and differences from shame, inaccurate conclusions, ineffective coping patterns, and strategies that repeatedly haven't worked.

Become — How do I build a life that works for me?
Use greater self-understanding to develop practical strategies, supports, accommodations, skills, routines, relationships, and environments that make success more achievable. The goal isn't to become someone without neurodevelopmental differences. It is to build greater capability, self-reliance, confidence, and intentional choice while becoming more fully the person you are capable of being
